Perry was born to Laurie Metcalf (actor) and Jeff Perry (actor). Two of her earliest television appearances were as Jackie Harris on ABC's sitcom Roseanne. Her mother portrayed the role. But her parents would not permit her to perform until she reached the age of adulthood due to the negative effects that stress could affect their child. Perry, who was too shy for acting in high school, started to act in the theater at Northwestern University because she wanted to make new friends. Perry left for New York, where she was offered small roles in shows like Law & Order: Criminal Intent. The feeling of homesickness led Perry her back home California which was where theatre jobs were in demand. The Other Place was performed by her and her mom in 2013 on Broadway in 2013. In 2015, she was a part of her father and Kevin McKidd in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning play Anna Christie at the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in West Los Angeles. Perry played a lead role in nine episodes in 2016 of ABC's show The Family. In 2017, she played her own recurring part on The ABC drama about politics Scandal which starred her father. She also played in the role of a older Mary Cooper in Young Sheldon which was a CBS spin-off of The Big Bang Theory. The role was offered to her through an open audition despite being a fan of this role.
